First-Gen Undergrad: Taina Morales (Kresge '21, Sociology and Latin American & Latinx Studies)

Background: I am a first-gen, queer, Latinx, transfer student from Los Angeles. 

What motivated me to go to college: Understanding my ancestral background and social justice.

What's the biggest challenge you encountered as a first-gen student and how did you overcome it?: Financial struggles as well as mental health care.

How has your background helped you?: I believe that my background provided me with lenses within my field that not only makes me a better scholar but also community leader.

What would you tell my first-year self now?: No matter how hard it gets, don't give up.

What was the best thing about your college experience?: The best part of my undergrad experience was working with STARS, where I met lifelong friends and a community that I will take with me forever. 

How being a first-generation student has influenced me: Being first-gen has influenced me to create programs that help other first-gen students like myself during their application process to their undergrad.
